“Watching the House Divide” by John Brackman Will Be Displayed at the 2024 L.A. Times Festival of Books

The self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet will exhibit the book “Watching the House Divide” by John Brackman at the 2024 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. The literary festival will take place on April 20-21, 2024, at the campus of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. The L.A. Times Festival of Books is one of the most significant book festivals in the country and is a celebration of literature, arts, and culture and offers a variety of activities and books.

“Watching the House Divide” attempts to show how the American people, both North and South, came to understand through their newspapers how their country was slowly drifting into civil war as the events of 1860 and the first four months of 1861 unfolded and were reported. There were generally three views, depending on what section of the country you lived in. The South was pro-slavery; the North was generally anti-slavery, and the Border States could fall into both categories, depending on location. John Brackman’s book describes how five newspapers reported these happenings to a worried and divisive nation.

John wrote “Watching the House Divide” to bring some enlightenment to the events that ushered in the Civil War, as they were reported or editorialized to the people of that day. The book is his attempt to give voice to all sections of the country, both pro-slavery, abolitionist, and in-between. He emphasized that history records that the South seceded to maintain a lifestyle that was deeply rooted in slavery.

John Brackman is 76 and was born and raised in Concordia, Missouri, a community settled by German immigrants in the 1840s. This community was devastated by the Bushwhacker raids during the Civil War, and that background intrigued the author. John is currently a resident of Kansas City, Missouri, retired, married to his wife of 50 years, Ruth, and has three children and three grandchildren. He is a member of the Jackson County Historical Society and The State Historical Society of Missouri. He also is a member of the Raytown Missouri Rotary Club and a former member and president of the Raytown Missouri Board of Education.
