Global Asbestos Awareness Week and Resources to Protect Building Occupants and Workers
CTSI provides industrial hygiene, material, and indoor environmental quality testing, consulting, and training services to identify asbestos and other regulated substances to protect people and help businesses comply with health and safety regulations.
Even in countries like the United States, that banned many uses of asbestos years ago, exposure hazards still exist primarily due to the many past uses of asbestos in building materials.
The 20th annual Global Asbestos Awareness Week (GAAW) takes place during the first week of April. The week-long campaign was started by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization and is designed to educate the public about asbestos hazards to mitigate future exposure risks.
Asbestos is a generic name given to six fibrous minerals that have been used in numerous commercial products and building materials over the years because of its low cost, high tensile strength, chemical and thermal stability, high flexibility, and low electrical conductivity. The minerals include chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, anthophyllite, and actinolite.
“It has long been recognized that exposure to asbestos fibers can cause a number of diseases, including asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma,” said Frank Selamie, President of CTSI. “This is why the efforts of Global Asbestos Awareness Week are so important. Even in countries like the United States, that banned many uses of asbestos years ago, exposure hazards still exist primarily due to the many past uses of asbestos in building materials. This is true for residential, commercial, and institutional buildings. When these materials become friable with age, or when they are handled or disturbed, asbestos fibers can become airborne and remain in the air for long periods of time. This creates an inhalation risk and is why there are regulations in place designed to protect workers and the public.”
To help in this effort, CTSI’s industrial hygiene, environmental, and building science professionals offer comprehensive asbestos testing, consulting, and training services. These resources protect people and can also be essential for keeping businesses and institutions in regulatory compliance.
